Design, Build, Compete!

St John the Baptist science club members in 4th, 5th and 6th grade gather around their wind energy tournament board after competing for the title of Most Powerful Wind Turbine. Students were guided by volunteer instructors to design and create their own wind turbine blades, determine the optimum number of blades on their turbine rotor, then test the output (or voltage) of the turbine motors using the constant wind speed of a fan and a voltmeter. This event kicked off the school's 10-week, after-school science club, which is open to students in grades 2nd through 6th. Upcoming science club sessions will tackle the subjects of catapults, cryogenics, computer programming, magnets and vacuum and air pressure.
