St. John's second graders learn about 1790 Census

Second graders at St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Vermillion performed "Tricking the Tallyman," a story by Jacqueline Davie (screenplay adaptation by Maria Therres, 2nd grade teacher) to an audience of parents, grandparents and friends. Students portrayed early Americans being counted in the late 1700s for the first census in our country. The historical play, set in Tunbridge, VT, depicts behind-the-scene events of our first census and its role in the implementation of the new United States Constitution. Characters explained concepts of taxation, conscription and representation in the new government.
