Making birthdays better

Miss Maria Therres' 2nd grade class at St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Vermillion worked on a class service project to help the children who stay at the Robert Lewis House in Hastings. The class assembled "birthday bags" after they gathered all the items needed to make a special birthday cake for any child: a cake mix, canned frosting, candles, a birthday greeting and a small birthday gift all went into 11 festive gift bags. Miss Therres and her students hope their contribution to the Lewis House will help the many children who pass through the home know how special they are, especially on their birthday. Since Lewis House opened its doors in 1979, more than 65,000 survivors of domestic violence have benefited from its safety, support and advocacy services, with help provided to more than 2,000 women and children annually. Trained advocates offer emotional support, safety planning, referrals to community resources and help in navigating the court system.
